1/9: Beginning Copperplate Calligraphy with Benjawan

Class Level: Absolute Beginner

Age Requirements: 12 and older

This class is a study of a traditional calligraphy script called Copperplate which consists of rules and fundamental strokes that are easy to follow. It is very important for beginners to learn the fundamental strokes in this style of script first before moving on to develop their own styles. In this class, you will learn the how to properly use the calligraphy materials as it is important for all beginners; you can be practicing for months but if you don't have a good handle on the tools, it would be very hard to improve in your practice. We will also teach you how to write basic strokes then to writing all minuscules letters a-z. At the end of this class, you will be able to create something fun and we'll have a little project too! Whether you want to do a place card, thank you, or happy birthday cards. We will guide you through the process.

To have feedback from an experienced Calligrapher is also important to improve your Calligraphy. If you would like to continue your practice and improve on your calligraphy, you are encouraged to scan or send a photo of your work to us via email. We will help analyze and give a feedback one time after class!

This class is for absolute beginners, so you don’t need to bring anything, just show up and have some fun. All supplies are included with the class and for you to bring home.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Hello, it’s Benjawan. Most of my Calligrafriends call me Benny. I’ve been practicing Calligraphy for almost three years now. I know it doesn’t seem that long, but let me tell you; the question that people ask me the most is “How do you learn Calligraphy so fast?” Well, there is no secret; my answer is simple “You have to study too, not just practice” I believe you have to practice the right techniques to be able to achieve your goals. You can spend years practicing but don’t see improvement if your  technique is wrong. One of the best decisions on my Calligraphy journey is to learn from experience Calligraphers. Only one small adjustment makes a big difference!

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

The Traveling Calligrapher Art Studio is located on San Pedro Street in Downtown San Jose across the street from The Old Spaghetti Factory. There is a parking structure right on the street, so it's convenient and if you're looking for something to eat, drink or do after class, there's the San Pedro Square Market. 

We validate parking, valid for 2 hours.
